چکیده

When Karel Svoboda describes his decades-long efforts to visualize the brain with ever-greater precision, the unmistakable impression is that of a man driven by an insatiable urge to expand the frontiers of technology in the service of science. Since the mid1990s, when he and his colleagues developed transformative imaging techniques to peer at brain cells with unprecedented clarity, Svoboda, a neuroscientist at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus in Virginia, has expanded the toolbox for unraveling the mysteries of the brain. Svoboda is perhaps best known for using a technique called twophoton microscopy to detect cellular and molecular changes that occur at synapses—the hubs of neuronal communication—during learning and short-term memory. For his pathbreaking techniques and insights, Svoboda, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, earned the Academy’s 2017 Pradel Research Award. Svoboda recently discussed his work with PNAS.

QnAs with Jan Svoboda.

HIV belongs to a family of viruses known as retroviruses. The ability of retroviruses to synthesize DNA using their RNA genome as a template distinguishes them from other viruses. The synthesized DNA can then integrate itself into the genome of an infected cell, becoming what is known as a provirus. Jan Svoboda, a cell and molecular biologist at the Czech Academy of Sciences, who was elected to...

Ca Signaling in Dendritic Spines

Dendritic spines are neuronal microcompartments that are diffusionally isolated from their parent dendrites and neighboring spines. Optical studies of spine Ca dynamics have revealed the Ca sources and Ca clearance mechanisms under a variety of experimental conditions and in diverse experimental systems. Here we review our understanding of Ca signaling in spines, point out gaps in our knowledge...

Semi-automatic Theme-Rheme Identification

In this paper we start from the theory of the Functional Sentence Perspective developed primarily by Firbas [1], Svoboda [2] and also Sgall, Hajičová [3] and make an attempt to formulate a procedure allowing to semi-automatically recognize which sentence constituents carry information that is contextually dependent and thus known to an adressee (theme), constituents containing new information (...
